If you’ve ever planted zucchini in your garden, you know. By early August, zucchini is coming out of your ears. It’s glorious, but it’s … a LOT.

Zucchini is so beloved and prolific, there is even a holiday dedicated to it: National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day!

What Day is Sneak a Zucchini Day?

Sneak a Zucchini Day is on August 8 every year. In 2024, it lands on a Thursday.

What is National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day?

The name is pretty self-explanatory!

You grab your armfuls of overflowing zucchini and gift some – or many – to your friends and neighbors. You can embrace the name of the holiday and sneak it in the dead of night then run away (laughing maniacally, naturally), or you can knock on the door so they know their source.

Either way, it’s a win-win. They get zucchini, and you get sweet relief!

History of Sneak a Zucchini Day

Sneak a Zucchini on Your Neighbor’s Porch Day was created by an actor and talk show host named Thomas Roy in the late 1980s.

Together with his wife, Ruth Roy, and son, Michael, the Roy family have copyrighted over 70 “holidays” in total. (source) (Side note: They also created “Be Bald and Be Free Day” [Oct. 14], “Answer Your Cat’s Question Day” [Jan. 22], and “What if Cats & Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day” [March 3]). Best family legacy EVER.

Sneak a Zucchini Day Printables

It’s optional, but you could always print a note to attach to your zucchini gift. I found a couple of printables on other websites and created a couple of my own.

  • I love these printable tags that you can attach to your basket of gifted zucchini.
  • Here’s another printable that’s cute for the big day.

I couldn’t help myself, and I created a couple of printables, too.

Here’s a simple one … (right click to save and print)

And here’s one with a goofy poem. (I like to write goofy poems.)
